Description:The Striped Bass is one of the most sought after species of marine fishes. Because of it's prime importance the DEC has been studying its life history characteristics for many years. It is imperative that issues, such as that proposed to be addressed by this study, are accomplished in order to make sound fisheries management decisions. The objectives of the striped bass aging study are: 1. To purchase the equipment, supplies and materials necessary to prepare several hundred otolith sections for age determination; 2. To collect a sample ofstriped bass otoliths for use as practice; 3. To use the equipment and experience gained from work on the practice set to prepare sections of otoliths collected from known-age striped bass; 4. To compare the ages assigned by two readers, of both otoliths and scales collected from those knownage specimens; and 5. To prepare a report of findings, and, if possible, to submit such report to an appropriate peer reviewed journal for publication.
