Description:Coastal communities are at risk from numerous environmental hazards including storms, flooding, erosion, and wildfire. Some areas are more at-risk than others due to a variety of factors. The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science partnered with the Sunrise County Economic Council and other local partners to assess community risk in relation to coastal and inland natural hazards in Maine’s Washington County and Greater East Grand Region. Due to its rural and widely dispersed population, this region is particularly susceptible to infrastructure failures and community isolation during individual or compounded hazard events. This assessment used both indicators and indices to evaluate environmental hazards and assess relative risk across the study area.
