Description:In the first Technical Attachment on the spectral model, we examined what is meant by the term spectral and how the number of modes in a spectral model relates to its resolution of small-scale features. In this second of four parts, we will first examine how this spectral technique can be used to make a forecast and how this relates to the familiar finite difference technique used in grid-point models. Secondly, we will look briefly at the special functions that are used to represent meteorological fields in a spectral model.
