Description:There are several radar techniques that should be used to identify severe local storms. All of these techniques involve extensive vertical scanning of the storms. Often times at local warning radar sites time and personnel constraints make it impossible to do much more than take radar overlays and determine storm tops. When this is the case, there are some radar "signatures" that can be used to identify areas where wind damage may occur. By being familiar with these signatures time can be saved in pinpointing where to issue warnings or concentrate efforts to gather storm report information.
