Description:"New York State has a low frequency of tornado occurrence. During the period from 1962 to 1991, New York State averaged 1.2 tornadoes per 10,000 square miles, which ranked 37 out of the 50 states. However, during recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of tornadoes. During the decade of the 1950's, New York averaged just 1.2 tornadoes per year. The number increased steadily with 3.1 tornadoes occurring per year in the 1960s, 5.4 per year in the 1970s, and 6.7 in the 1980s. Since 1990, the average has been 16.5 per year, with a record 25 tornadoes occurring in 1992"--Introduction.
