Description:As offshore wind development progresses in the United States, tribal concerns about the impact of that development have grown.1 A question is raised about whether the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has a role in the leasing process and what other agencies are involved in addressing tribal concerns in the offshore wind development process. This report includes a brief overview of responsibility for offshore wind energy lease processes and tribal consultation with federally recognized tribes, the role of the BIA generally, and then a short discussion of the BIA’s involvement in the development and leasing of other forms of energy development.
