Description:The year 1985 was the ninth year that foreign and joint venture fisheries operated under the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MFCMA) of 1976 which requires foreign vessels to accept observers. In 1985, the Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center sent 421 U.S. fisheries observers to-sample aboard Japanese, Soviet, Polish, Republic of Korea, Taiwanese, and Portuguese vessels involved with either foreign directed fisheries or as joint venture processing ships in fisheries conducted with U.S. fishermen.
