Description:On 14 November 1974, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Department of the Interior, published a new accelerated leasing schedule proposing 21 Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) oil and gas lease sales. This schedule was in response to President Nixon’s order to accelerate leasing largely by opening up “frontier” OCS areas in order to gain self sufficiency in meeting the nation’s energy needs. The Alaskan continental shelf, comprising 74% of all U.S. continental shelf areas and extending as far as 960 km off the coast in the southeastern Bering Sea, constitutes the nation's largest unexplored petroleum area. Consequently, Alaska has received special prominence in the planning schedules for OCS oil and gas development.
