Description:The Republic of Senegal, which covers roughly 76,000 square miles (about the size of South Dakota), is located on the West African bulge. Its 300-mile coastline on the Atlantic Ocean marks its western border, while the Senegal River divides the country from its northern neighbor Mauritania. On the east it is bordered by Mali, and on the south by both Guinea and Portuguese Guinea. The Gambia extends some 200 miles along the banks of the Gambia River into the middle of Senegal. (See map.) The country's 30,000 fishermen provide Senegal's 3,840,000 population with roughly 30.6 pounds of seafood each year, making the Senegalese Africa's foremost consumers of fish. Fisheries were estimated to contribute about 3 percent of the GNP and 8 percent of total export earnings for 1967.
