Description:Unprecedented growth and expansion of higher-resolution atmospheric observational systems, improved graphic and alphanumeric communications, as well as sophisticated automated display systems, threaten to inundate current Federal archive and data storage systems. Concurrently, the demand for retrospective meteorological data to support studies of global change and other research, as well as for operational and engineering studies, is growing. This growth has subsequently led to a proliferation of Federal retrospective databases. A potential for duplication and incompatibility between databases exists. The Interdepartmental Committee for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research, in recognition of this potential problem, established a Working Group for Meteorological Information Management to coordinate Federal Government data management activities, and prepare this Plan.
