Description:This report on cartographic generalization addresses the need for the National Ocean Service (NOS) to select a technical and operational solution to the problem of cartographic generalization within the scope of the Automated Nautical Charting System II. Cartographic generalization is a most complex issue at NOS because of our unique approach to digital nautical cartography. A thorough understanding of the issues in cartographic generalization, such as, feature selection, point simplification, feature aggregation, feature displacement, are essential for developing an optimal implementation strategy.
