Description:Chesapeake Bay-related results of preliminary analyses from three National Status and Trends Program (NS&T) projects-—Benthic Surveillance, Mussel Watch, and the Historical Database-—are presented and discussed A temporal trend of declining levels of DDT and metabolites in Chesapeake Bay American oyster ( Crassoslrea virginica) tissue was extracted from the NS&T Historical Database, while NS&T Mussel Watch results from 1986 showed a spatial trend of increasing concentrations of metals in oyster tissue with increasing distance northward into the bay Scatter plots of metals loading vs. % aluminum in sediment indicated high trace element concentrations at upper Chesapeake Bay sites. Statistical analysis of data from all Benthic Surveillance sites where the target fish species in Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias unduialus). was sampled, yielded significant positive correlations between total DDT in sediment and total DDT in associated bottomfish livers, as well as between total aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments and occurrences of histopathological disorders. However, no Atlantic croaker or spot {Leiostomusxanthurus) in Chesapeake Bay were found to have neoplastic or preneoplastic lesions, generally considered to be the most serious of histopathological disorders.
