Description:Point sources constitute perhaps the most complex set of source categories for the National Coastal Pollutant Discharge Inventory (NCPDI). Discharge sources in this category are marked by their wide diversity, geographic distribution, and variation from year to year as well as seasonally within any given year. For these reasons, the estimation of pollutant discharges was a complex task. In addition, point sources are of interest in the NCPDI because they have been the focus of major legislation to control pollutant discharges to surface waters, including such laws as the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act and the 1977 Clean Water Act Amendments.
