"In January 1973, a comprehensive, seasonal survey of the benthic macro- and meiofauna and sediments of Raritan Bay was begun. Although the survey included 5 collection periods at up to 65 sites, the survey results were not completely processed or analyzed. To date, the only macrofaunal results reported were the preliminary summary of McGrath (1974) and the reexamination of the full data set by Steimle and Caracciolo-Ward (1989). McGrath (1974) reported on 40 samples from 28 stations during the January/February 1973 collections and also included a brief summary of major sediment types and distribution. Steimle and Caracciolo-Ward (1989) summarized all processed macrofaunal data from most collections (264 samples), including biomass measurements from the archived samples"--Introduction.
