Description:Ponds and small lakes are diverse environments found across the Midwest. From suburban ponds to farm ponds and natural lakes, many people have fond memories associated with ponds, such as fishing with relatives, teaching a child to swim, and viewing wildlife in their natural environment. Ponds are dynamic natural systems with many living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors. These living and non-living factors, and their interactions with each other, create an ecosystem. This means no two ponds or lakes are the same. You might be thinking: “Why do I need to know this?” The truth is, understanding the pond ecosystem can help you better understand how your management actions affect each element of the ecosystem. With an understanding of the ecosystem, you can have better outcomes from your pond management.
