Description:This atlas supplement describes the production of 1/2° x 1/2° objectively analyzed fields of surface marine climatologies of heat, momentum, and fresh water fluxes along with other parameters of interest. These fields are derived from individual observations in the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) from January 1945 to December 1989. The monthly and weekly climatologies are analyzed on a 1/2-degree latitude by 1/2-degree longitude global grid. The smallest features resolved are about 350 km in size, about half the size of the smallest features found in the corresponding 1° x 1° analysis data set. The finer resolution also produces more accurate size, location, and magnitude of features than those found in the 1° x 1° analysis, but only in regions of sufficient observation density. As in the 1° x 1° data set, corrections have been made to reduce wind speed bias associated with an erroneous Beaufort equivalent scale, to quality control night-time fractional cloud cover observations according to the brightness ofthe sky, and to assign clear weather to certain Present Weather observations recorded as missing. This supplement presents in moderate detail, the method of analysis and the physical parameterizations adopted.
