Description:This atlas presents objectively analyzed fields of surface marine climatology and anomalies, over most of the global ocean, of the sensitivity of constrained net heat flux to changes in sea surface temperature. These fields are provided as an aid to ocean modelers wishing to implement surface heat forcing as the sum of the observed constrained net heat flux and a newtonian cooling term, with time scales determined by the net heat flux gradient with respect to the observed sea surface temperature. Climatology fields of the component flux sensitivities (latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, long wave radiation, long wave vapor pressure sensitivity, long wave cloudiness parameter sensitivity) are shown as well. These revised monthly mean fields are derived from individual observations in the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) from January 1945 to December 1989 and are analyzed on a 1-degree by 1-degree global grid. Corrections have been made to reduce wind speed bias associated with an erroneous Beaufort equivalent scale. In addition to seasonal climatology, maps of interannual standard deviations and observation density are presented for each component of the constrained net heat flux sensitivity.
