Description:In 1986, the National Mussel Watch Program (MWP), was designed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to monitor the Nation’s coastal waters for chemical contaminants and biological indicators of water quality. The MWP is based on the periodic collection and analysis of bivalves (oysters and mussels) and sediment from a network of monitoring sites located throughout the Nation’s coastal zones. Currently, five regions (Northeast, Southeast, Gulf of Mexico, West Coast, & Great Lakes) are sampled on a five-year rotation, with one region being sampled each year. The focus of this Gulf of Mexico technical report is to discuss the general distribution of trace metal contaminants in bivalve tissues collected from 39 sites across five states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida) in the northern Gulf of Mexico on the US coast. This report contains the analysis of both the most recent (2017) data as well as data previously collected by the MWP.
