The species of Centropristis are characterized by their gross morphology. Over the years there bave been several attempts to separate northern and southern forms of C. striata along the Atlantic coast on morphological characters. There may be two groups on the Atlantic coast - one centered off the Middle Atlantic Bight and the other off South carolina.
