Description:Part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) mission is to provide reliable and timely scientific information about the United States’ ocean and coastal resources, including benthic habitat maps. Benthic habitat maps are a part of NOAA’s mission because they provide a baseline for marine managers to understand and monitor changes to these ecologically and economically valuable resources. Although these maps are important, they still require substantial manual effort to develop. One significant bottleneck in this process is the need to manually identify and annotate benthic species and habitats in underwater imagery (videos and photographs). This bottleneck makes it challenging to produce habitat maps at the repeated time intervals. To help address this challenge, NOAA National Center for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) evaluated several readily available artificial intelligence (AI) tools to understand their capacity for annotating benthic habitats in underwater images. We conducted broad market research to identify as many, potentially relevant AI solutions as possible, and then selected four AI solutions (CoralNet, VIAME, TagLab and Custom Vision) for further testing based on our core requirements.
