Description:Very little is known about marine mammals in the Atlantic Ocean in water deeper than 100 fathoms. Therefore, a 40-day cruise was conducted to study marine mammals and pelagic apex predators in the Atlantic Ocean. The NOAA Ship Oregon II departed Pascagoula, Mississippi on 3 January 1992. The primary area of operation was in the Blake Plateau area of the Atlantic Ocean between 28°00' and 35°00' North latitude and from the coastal boundary (100 fathom contour line) to the Exclusive Economic Zone (Figure 1). The Gulf stream, along the western portion of the study area, is the dominant oceanographic feature in this area.
