"The National Marine Fisheries Service proposes to issue a five-year scientific research permit for takes of marine mammals in the wild, pursuant to the Marine Manunal Protection Act of 1972, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1361 et seq.) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). Permit No. 15682 would authorize harassment of humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) whales off the coasts of Puerto Rico. Activities would include close approach by vessel for behavioral observations, photo-identification, and passive acoustic monitoring. The purpose of the research is to investigate the importance of smaller winter habitats used by humpback whales during the breeding and calving season"--Abstract.
