Description:Approximately 95% of Florida's commercial species and most of the recreational species depend on estuaries during one or more of their life stages. A major factor in maintaining the biological health of these essential estuaries is their salinity regime. Freshwater inflow from rivers and creeks is important in furnishing detrital nutrients, transporting sediments into estuaries, and in maintaining circulation patterns. This report examines several regulatory programs and planning initiatives addressing the maintenance of freshwater inflow to estuaries in Florida. It also discusses potential modifications of these programs to improve the health of the state's estuaries.
