Description:North Carolina's Pamlico Sound is the nation's largest lagoonal estuary. In this paper, based on field and modeling studies conducted from 1978 to 1980, the authors analyze the physical oceanography of the sound and its surrounding nursery regions. Information is presented on salinity, temperature, thermohaline gradients, tides, winds and sea level of Pamlico Sound.
