Description:Timing of a seasonal fishery opening can influence total revenue. The traditional approach has been to open when the shrimp reach a marketable However, shrimp increase in value as they grow; thus a later opening may increase total revenue. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal opening time for two North Carolina shrimp fisheries--the New River and Pamlico Sound fisheries--using the general seasonal harvesting model developed by Kellogg (1985). Optimal solutions were generated for several scenarios by varying natural mortality, initial population size, and price; these were then compared to the `unregulated' case to determine if the season opening should be delayed beyond the time when shrimp reach marketable size.
