Description:The Michigan Sea Grant College Program conducted an evaluation of its administration, research, education and outreach through Extension and Communications for the period 1988-1998. Several assessment techniques were used, including facilitated discussion (administration), reviewing reports (research, education and outreach) and conducting surveys (Extension and Communications). Michigan Sea Grant has conducted acritical review of its performance during the past decade and learned some important lessons. The primary lessons are: ●It is important to evaluate the program periodically to assess its strengths and weaknesses and to plan for improvements. ●It can be difficult to assess one's own performance objectively, but worth the exercise if one is honest and committed to improving in the future. Michigan Sea Grant has recently evaluated itself in order to gain insights about its strengths and weaknesses from its history and to develop plans to be more successful in the future. This self-evaluation was an honest attempt to be objective and fair to the program as a whole, relishing notable accomplishments and benefits appropriately while seeking to improve the program's methods and productivity. What follows is a brief discussion of the methods used to conduct the self-evaluation and participate constructively in the PAT review process; sections on the evaluation of the various program components; and conclusions and recommendations for future improvements.
