Description:This report spotlights research supported by the Oyster Disease Research Program. While the focus is on MSX and Dermo, two parasitic diseases that have been responsible for major mortalities of native eastern oysters in the mid-Atlantic region, the report also examines research and its applications for combating juvenile oyster disease in the northeast and research on summer mortality of Pacific oysters on the west coast. Feature articles deal with breeding disease resistance in the hatchery, computer modeling for managing around disease, cellular studies on the dynamics between parasites and the oyster's immune system, and new molecular tools for rapid diagnosis of disease.
