Description:

The trade and capital of this fishery were the foundation of the growth of manufacturing in New England. Thus, the industry has an important place in the evolution of the New England economy. It was determined that if we wished to generate the kind of social and cultural information that would help reduce the most serious consequences of management, we needed to learn more about the full range of variation that exists in the region under study. Thus, we selected five more ports for study. These are the small ports of Newburyport, Chatham, and Westport, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island; and Stonington, Connecticut.
