Description:Some 10% of reported damage to vessels in 1978 was directly related to severe weather, i.e., to hydrodynamic impact forces of stormy seas. The economic and safety implications for offshore structures of such damage are great. This `opportunity brief' outlines work at MIT on deep water wave-breaking forces, structural responses to hydrodynamic impacts, slow drift motion of structures, ice loading on structures, and strengthening criteria for navigation in ice.
