Description:This guidebook was designed for planners, architects, landowners, homeowners, community groups and government agencies. It complements the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Coastal Construction Manual with a special emphasis on land use planning and siting. This book contains 240 pages and 13 summary tables. Eighty color figures summarize the concepts in the book and help to display the geographical variability of hazard risk in Hawaii due to erosion, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, lava and wind damage. The guidebook identifies four overlapping hazard zones and discusses options and strategies for each zone. As some options are siting related, the development process is divided into eight stages and appropriate mitigation measures are presented for each stage. The mitigation strategies presented are applicable to all natural hazards, whether they are along the coast of Hawaii, or inland in another locality.
