Description:In Hawaii, there is no single geomorphic feature which is more unstable than the beach zone. Over periods of time ranging from many years to a few days, the beach may be markedly altered in its size, shape, volume and other characteristics. These changes may be caused by numerous factors such as storms, seasonal and long-term variations in wave conditions, reductions in the rate of sand production, increases in exposure due to erosion of protecting headlands or reefs, and human activity. The constantly shifting sands on a beach have posed some serious problems with regard to coastal zone management. These problems are summarized as: (1)Siting of New Beach Structures, (2) Remedial Measures to Save Present Structures from Beach Retreat, (3) Regulation of Sand Mining, (4) Acquisition of Land for Public Beach Parks, and (5) Extent of Private Ownership.
