Description:

For this work, researchers devised a standardized assessment of site-specific shellfish survival and growth to allow a relative comparison of aquaculture sites. Specifically they conducted short-term (two-month) assessments of the growth and survival of oysters ("Crassostrea virginica"), quahogs ("Mercenaria mercenaria"), and soft shell clams ("Mya arenaria") at locations around Cape Cod. Each site used similarly sized juvenile shellfish supplied from the same hatchery and cultured identically. The authors discuss results and recommendations for growers and scientists.
