Description:A computer model was developed to assess the economic feasibility of sponge farming in the US-affiliated Pacific islands. The model was based on sponge farm development work currently being conducted in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. Proforma financial projections, defined by the model, are the result of the numerous assumptions that went into developing the model and are therefore representative of this particular model's performance only. Changes to these assumptions will, of course, result in different projections. Computer models are built to be representative of some particular set of parameters and one therefore, attempts to use the best information available at the time. By doing so, the model has a more realistic chance of representing the actual performance of the real operation in question. Seven-year proforma financial projections are discussed for a sponge farm located in a lagoon setting, in a tropical island environment.
