Description:Changes in oyster abundance and distribution can be used as indicators of environmental change due to fluctuations in natural environmental parameters, overfishing, or to anthropogenically induced changes. Previous studies of eastern oyster ("Crassostrea virginica") population dynamics within the Duplin River, near Sapelo Island, Georgia, have shown that oyster recruitment rates can vary greatly from year to year. The Duplin River and its associated marshes and uplands make up the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR). This project inventoried and mapped the existing oyster beds within the SINERR. Long-term environmental alterations in the Duplin River oyster population will be monitored by measuring changes in the size and shape of individual oyster beds over time.
