Description:The National Bycatch Reports (NBR) published by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) examine bycatch occurring across major fisheries managed under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). For the purposes of the NBR, bycatch is defined as discarded catch of any living marine resource plus unobserved mortality due to a direct encounter with fishing gear. This definition is more expansive than the MSA definition of bycatch because the purpose of the NBR is to provide estimates not only of fish bycatch but also fishery interactions with marine mammals and seabirds.
