Description:Rapid population growth and industrial development have caused a sharp increase in the level of pollutants that are emitted into Louisiana's coastal waters. Seafood processing wastewaters primarily consist of biodegradable materials that are free of toxic substances yet tend to contain high concentrations of soluble organics. This report has four specific objectives. These are to identify the major categories of Louisiana seafood processors by species, to define the environmental regulatory requirements that apply to seafood processors, to catalog available historical data for describing the wastewaters of major Louisiana seafood processors, and to develop treatment recommendations for the nontoxic biodegradable wastes produced by these facilities for each processing category.
