Description:

Project objectives: a, To evaluate the enterovirus concentration of oysters sampled from a prohibited reef versus the "natural viral background" of a reef bacteriologically approved for public shellfish collection. Samples for enterovirus detection will also be examined for hepatitis B surface antigen (1978) and hepatitis A antigen (1979). b. Relate enterovirus contamination of oyster tissue with the level of fecal coliforms found in prohibited and approved waters. c. Disseminate information to the public via oral and written presentations. d. Determine if enterovirus contamination of shellfish corresponds to the categories now used for shellfish growing water classification. e. Collect necessary methods to allow suitable evaluation of future depuration projects along the Gulf Coast.
