Description:In this report, the simulation of ocean wave kinematics by digital convolution techniques is presented. In deep water, the vertical attenuation and horizontal propagation of ocean waves are solved analytically. In shallow water, the vertical attenuation and horizontal propagation problems are solved using the fast Fourier transform. It is shown that the convolution integrals required to simulate irregular waves are more efficient than summing sinusoids; guidelines for the processing of real wave data are established. Applications are demonstrated with example problems.
