Description:American Samoa, located in the tropical South Pacific at about 170 degrees west longitude and 14 degrees latitude, is a cluster of islands of volcanic origin. The islands are officially classified as an unincorporated territory of the United States and, since 1951, when control was transferred from the Department of the Navy, have been under the administration of the Department of the Interior. This study was conducted as a team effort with each participant aiding others as the need arose. The basis for many of the conclusions and recommendations in this study was the investigation of tides and circulation in Pala Lagoon. A survey of the distribution and abundance of coliform bacteria was also conducted.
