Description:In 1985, U.S. fresh salmon imports exceeded the total U.S. domestic troll catch. To a considerable degree, the large and growing volume of imports is due to highly advanced fish farming efforts in Europe, particularly Norway. If Alaska and other salmon production areas of the U.S. are to remain competitive it is mandatory that strong aquaculture programs be instituted. This report reviews the status of salmon economics and the potential for salmon culture in Alaska.
