Description:Although the recreational fishing sector is more fragmented than the commercial fishing sector, it still is a major economic force in coastal communities. As recreational fishermen make purchases, they affect employment, wages, salaries and other economic measures. This paper summarizes a research project (sponsored by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Sport Fishing Institute) which assesses economic activity associated with the industry and analyzes development opportunities.
