  Results are reported of a Maine/New Hampshire Sea Grant research project involving survey cruises in three estuaries of the midcoast Maine region: the Damariscotta, Sheepscot, and the Kennebec River estuaries. An assessment is made of the role of varying river water discharge among the three systems on the hydrography, nutrient regimes, planktonic populations, and suspended particulates.
