Description:The St. Lawrence Seaway is prevented by winter closedown from realizing its true potential a a full service, low cost transportation route. To illustrate: significant amounts of grain and general cargo captive to the Seaway are shipped overseas via seaboard ports as a result of the close-down from mid-December to mid-April. The consequent loss of economic benefits and failure to achieve full potential have prompted discussion of extending the Seaway's navigation season.
