Description:L4 sea surface temperature analysis produced daily at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center using optimal interpolation from AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5 data (http://pathfinder.nodc.noaa.gov) (when available, otherwise operational AVHRR data are used), AMSR-E, and in situ ship and buoy observations. A second similar product is available back to 1985 that includes only the in situ and AVHRR Pathfinder data to avoid a jump in the analysis and to provide the longest, most consistent time series. This product uses the microwave-based AMSR-E data starting in June of 2002, which are capable of observing through clouds. The OI analysis is a daily average SST that is bias adjusted using a spatially smoothed 15-day in situ SST average. Both day and night satellite fields are independently adjusted.
