Description:Pressure tendency analysis has been successfully employed by forecasters for several decades. Its main strength lies in its ability to forecast the short term (3-6 hour) path of the center of major low pressure systems. These systems, which occur mainly during the winter months, often contain a variety of precipitation types and intensities. It is to the forecaster's benefit to be able to determine the general path and speed of the low because of the sharp spatial delineations between such events as heavy wet snow and light rain or drizzle.
