Description:Recent studies by Steigerwaldt (1986) have indicated that significant snowfalls east of the Continental Divide are often associated with deformation cloud zone systems. A deformation zone is defined by Weldon (1986) as the elongated region along the stretching axis of a hyperbolic zone or col region in a wind field. Figure 1 shows the deformation zones associated with nearly stationary closed circulation systems.
