Description:The national needs for space environment services are shown to require enhanced monitoring of the Sun and solar wind. Various avenues to improvements in current remote sensing systems are available; one of the more promising is the U.S. Air Force concept of a dedicated solar activity monitoring satellite (SAMSAT). We review the current products of space environment services and note the mutual interest and history of cooperation between the NOAA Space Environment Laboratory and the Air Force. Arguments are advanced for the utility of SAMSAT prime instruments such as an X—ray Imager, a Coronal Mass Ejection Monitor, and a Vector Magnetograph in supporting the NOAA and Air Force missions.
