Description:Analysis of aircraft and radar data obtained in hurricane Anita of 1977 supports the following conclusions concerning the storm's dynamics: The velocity amplitudes associated with the spiral-mode asymmetries are characteristically a few ms • Both the correlations among the dynamic variables and the propagation of the spiral echoes on radar are consistent with Willoughby's (1978afb, 1979b) irward propagating inertia-buoyancy wave model of spiral bands• Both radar and aircraft data indicate that the storm center executed a sinusoidal oscillation about a mean uniform translation• The region of intense ascent surrounding the eye appears to be confined inside the radius of maximum wind, and the relation between the azimuthally averaged tangential wind and pressure height is adequately described by the gradient wind equation•
