Description:The general objective of the Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) in METROMEX (Metropolitan Meteorological Experiment) at St. Louis has been to study the wind field within the urban convectively mixed layer or planetary boundary layer (PBL) during clear conditions. Radar reflecting chaff with a small fall velocity (0.3 m/s) was distributed from an aircraft and from the ground to provide reflecting tracers of air motion. To insure adequate dispersion of the chaff by convection throughout the PBL, observations were
made during the afternoon on clear days when the convection was strong. The chaff cloud was observed with two X-band Doppler radars separated by 45 km.
