Description:The accuracy of artillery is dependent on a knowledge of the properties of the air mass through which the projectile passes. The purposes of this report are to: (1) Theoretically postulate the nature of a constructable long range remote wind sensor. (2) Predict its performance in clear air. (3) Make a preliminary estimate of its performance in realistic temperate climates which might in turn vindicate its usefulness under battlefield conditions. The pulsed coherent lidar is a straightforward application of pulsed Doppler radar techniques which have been used in military fire control systems for at least two decades.
